John E. Thordsen, MD
Dr. Thordsen completed his fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to that, he completed his residency in ophthalmology and internship in general surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He received his medical degree at Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico and holds a bachelor's degree from University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Thordsen is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Prior to joining NC Retina Associates, Dr. Thordsen was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army and was on active duty for 14 years. He served in the army as both a vitreo-retinal surgeon and officer in charge for the Western Region Medical Command's humanitarian eye surgical team out of Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Washington. Dr. Thordsen organized and carried out more than 10 humanitarian eye surgical missions within Latin America and Africa. He also created the Army's first ophthalmology training curriculum with surgical simulators and its incorporation in all of the Army's ophthalmology residency programs.
Although now out of the Army, Dr. Thordsen continues his humanitarian medical missions with the military as a consultant. Dr. Thordsen was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Spain. He has complete written and oral fluency in both English and Spanish.
Dr. Thordsen and his wife have three children. They both enjoy traveling and outdoor activities. In Practice Since: 2004
