Eugene A. Milder, MD
“Forming a therapeutic doctor-patient relationship of trust is not only crucial to good medical care, it is also the most meaningful aspect of my job. The field of retina medicine is advancing rapidly. Today we have more treatment options than ever to restore and preserve sight. Patients with eye disease often have a great deal of anxiety. My goal with each patient encounter is to use effective communication and education to empower the patient. Once a patient understands his or her eye disease and the treatment options available, it is much easier to reduce anxiety and encourage the patient to take an active role in the plan of care.”
“I first became interested in Ophthalmology as a Navy ROTC student at the University of Virginia. I was considering a career in Navy aviation or Navy medicine. As part of my aviation application I underwent a very thorough ophthalmic evaluation. I liked everything about Ophthalmology: the tools and technology, the attention to every minute detail, the amazing anatomy of the eye, the combination of medicine and surgery, and the ability to make a rapid and meaningful impact on the quality of life for patients. I chose a career in medicine, in Ophthalmology, and then a subspecialty in Retina. I have never regretted it. I love what I do.”
Dr Milder graduated from the University of Virginia as an Echols scholar and the Distinguished Midshipman Graduate of 1997. He earned his MD from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After spending three years as an aviation medicine doctor in the Navy, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Navy Medical Center in San Diego, California. He returned to Philadelphia for fellowship training in vitreoretinal disease at The Wills Eye Hospital. Dr Milder has been in practice with the Navy, stationed in Virginia, since 2011. He joined NC Retina Associates in 2018.
Dr Milder and his wife have 3 children and live in Holly Springs. They like to stay active: running, cycling, hiking, and swimming. They also enjoy movies, travelling, and spending time with family.
“Dr. Milder is one of the best physicians I've ever met, and I work in healthcare. He cares about his patients and takes the time to explain what is happening. He is patient with questions and delivers amazing care.”— NC Retina Patient Review
