Kurt T. Scavelli, MD
“Ophthalmology is an incredibly rewarding field; in my own family I have witnessed the effect retinal disease had on my grandmother’s vision and the dramatic results advances in the treatment of retinal disease had on restoring and preserving her vision. My goal is to provide compassionate, state of the art care to each of my patients while ensuring patients have a thorough understanding of their eye disease so they can actively participate in their care.”
Dr. Scavelli grew up in New Jersey. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornell University and went on to earn his MD from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. While in medical school, he dedicated his time to Ophthalmologic research earning the Dean’s Summer Research Award and a Fight for Sight Student Fellowship. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute (University of Pennsylvania) in Philadelphia and then a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt, he received the J. Donald M. Gass Award for excellence in patient care, as well as the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation Research Award.
Dr. Scavelli is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He has authored multiple book chapters and peer-reviewed publications; presented at local and international conferences; and acted as a reviewer for the journal, Retinal Cases and Brief Reports. He specializes in the treatment of medical and surgical retinal disease such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, retinal detachments, and secondary intraocular lens implantation.
